Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA) organized another exhibition for four days at Uganda Manufacturers’ Association (UMA) conference hall.
Speaking at the event, the minister for trade and industry; Hon. Amelia Kyambadde the chief guest at the event hailed the great work USSIA was doing to improve livelihood of the youth by empowering them and putting platforms for the youth to share their entrepreneurial ideas with those that have kick started.
“I have worked with USSIA ever since I joined the ministry and am glad to say that USSIA has been at the forefront of empowering youth with skills. USSIA should continue with such inputs,” said Amelia while addressing participants at the event held at UMA conference hall.
In addition Amelia encouraged the youth and those present to register with such member organizations like Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA), Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and Uganda Manufacturers’ Association that will recognize, empower and support them.
The Hon. Minister further informed the youth to work hard starting with their body fitness since that stimulates fitness of the mind.
How can we change our lives?
“We can change our lives by becoming entrepreneurs” said Amelia. In becoming an entrepreneur, one needs to ask themselves the following questions:
Who am I?
What can I do?
What is my potential?
Where do I want to be?
How do I reach there?
Where am I doing my business?
It is not capital; “do not start by thinking about capital, you always move around with your capital which is your brain God has given you” she added. In starting business, it is not peer influence rather passion and talent that will make you prosper.
What then are the challenges affecting young entrepreneurs?
“Demonstration effect is the biggest problem affecting young entrepreneurs.” “I want to start up fish farming because Amelia is doing it and it is prospering.” Amelia noted. To survive in business especially in a very competitive environment creativity and innovativeness is very important, one needs to look for an area where he has a comparative advantage. For example if one is selling tomatoes, don’t start up the same business, look for what compliments tomatoes like onions so that as one comes to buy tomatoes from your neighbor, he can be able to buy onions to from you since these items go hand in hand other than the client moving to another place looking for onions, said Amelia.
In conclusion, everyone can live the live they want to, all they have to do is work very hard and embrace partnership whether at individual or company level and in partnerships, one ought to look for that partner that will better their business; an individual with qualities that will strengthen their business.
