Crossing the Ethical Boundary 2: Insights from a Fraud Investigator.

I said ‘’before I give you my position. I really have to talk to my colleague about this. You see they have all this information.’’ Unknown to them, my colleague is actually my wife.

That evening I went home, I found my wife preparing my best dish – Kalo and chicken.

I went to the kitchen, and said: ‘’love, I don’t know what to do. What should I do?

She said what is it? Tell me. ‘’I said the job I just got, the client is paying us Ugx6m, but the people I am investigating have offered me Ugx50m to kill the evidence.’’ She left the Kalo on the gas, turned to me and at the top of her voice, said take the money; man I thought I married an accountant with the basics – 2 is greater than 1 – 50m is greater than 6m. Right?’’

You like my wife, don’t you?

However, if you were seated with my wife and me, on our six sitter dining table, you would have heard her say something that would change your life. Because it changed mine. She said ‘’love, ever since we met, you have always talked about starting your own firm and growing it as leader in governance. That is all you have always wanted. I don’t care how much they try to pay you, love your ethics is not for sale!

Yes, ‘’your ethics is not for sale’’

Most people think the number one reason why they are not successful is lack of money, lack of talent, lack of good jobs. NO. That’s not it.

The number one thing which stands between you and your dream is something good we settle for in exchange for our ethics a good job, a good car, a good salary, good income.

Is your ethics for sale?

Are you too desperate in your current life to sell your integrity and ethics for money?

I said see love, that’s why you are my wife.

The next day I went to the Bursar, and I was bold. I looked at him directly in the face and I was firm, I said ‘’my partner said my ethics is not for sale.’’

And I left that same morning I passed via the client and briefed him, gave him the full report and the Bursar, DOS and Head teacher immediately lost their jobs. Those are choices they made.

I felt very good after wards and guess what, I have managed to grow my business from a very small firm into a powerful respected Company – with top clients like in Uganda and as well as in Kenya.

I have been selected as a secretary of Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda. I continue to serve as Board member for Uganda Red Cross Society leading charge to transform the society, and I am  I would have become so much blessed of I had not  heed the advice my wife gave me.

‘’your ethics is not for sale’’ and guess what neither is yours. So turn to your neighbor and say ‘’ your ethics is not for sale.’’

When it comes to ethics, lead your first.  If you want people you must be ethical yourself.

People cross the ethical line due to four things summarized in the fraud diamond. The first three are unique to each individual. Everyone in this room works in order to earn a salary to pay for their needs and wants. You want to drive a good car, live in a good apartment or house. Get successful partners. You are motivated to make money and it is your DNA! You are motivated to earn more and live a good life.

The problem is that human condition of greed makes us want more. Because there will always be someone better than us. So when you see that person, all of a sudden, whatever you own, becomes bad. You become motivated to earn more. The higher the salary, the more the needs and the cycle continues.

Many of you in this room your prayer while at school was ‘’Lord God, help me qualify’’ God listened and gave you qualified then your prayer became. ‘’Lord God, help me get a job.’’

This too, God listened and you got a job paying Ugx1m.’’ Then you went back to prayer and said ‘’Lord God, what did I do to deserve just Ugx1m? Help me remove the HM and I replace him.’’ This time God decided to stop there and so back to your colleagues still in school praying for your job!

Now you are impatient that your salary is not increasing; as fast as you want.

What you decide to do is get a small salary advance to more into better apartment at the request of your new girlfriend. With an apartment in a good neighborhood comes the need to upgrade your means of transport. And now you need a small car.

The next thing you look for a salary loan. Now remember your income is lower than your expenses. Your salary can afford a taxi, but you have a Toyota Kikumi!
